I’ve never had to audition for a drama class at KEYS in the past, so why do I have to audition now?
Great question!
Now that we have two drama classes at KEYS, we had to
determine how to differentiate between the two. Should we divide by age groups
or have an audition class for students who really want to take their acting and
performing to the next level? Obviously, you know the answer, now.
The auditions aren’t so much to demonstrate ability but more
to demonstrate desire. Will your ability
be a part of it? Sure it will! Will you be placed in the KEYS Advanced Drama
class based solely on your ability? Absolutely not. By auditioning, you’re showing us you’re
willing to put yourself out there, you desire to perform, and you want to work
at becoming a better actor/performer.
We will be looking at several different things at the
auditions, but here are just a few to {hopefully} help you feel more at ease:
1. Is he/she comfortable on stage?
2.
How well does he/she follow direction?
3.
Did he/she seem prepared?
4.
What are his/her apparent strengths and
weaknesses?
5.
Did his/her character seem genuine?
I hope this helps to answer some of the questions you may
have. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions, and I may answer
them on the blog! (My contact information is in the KEYS newsletter.)

If you are interested in taking the Advanced Drama class for the
2014-2015 school year, now is your chance to audition! Here’s what you need to
know:
What IS the Advanced Drama
Class?
The KEYS Advanced Drama class is an audition class designed for
students with at least a year of acting and/or performing experience. All
students interested in taking the class must audition prior to signing up.
(Formal training or classes are not a prerequisite, but performing experience
is a must – no matter how big or how small.)
Who can audition?
Any student who is in at least 8th grade (or 13 at the
beginning of the school year) and has acting/performing experience may
audition.
Do I have to memorize something
for the audition?
No! We will have a packet prepared for you from which you will read.
Packets will be available a week before the first audition. We will also have
them available for download at keysdrama.blogspot.com.
Do you have any advice for my
audition?
Be prepared. Pick up the packet
in advance and familiarize yourself with the information and scripts included. Seriously,
you don’t have to memorize it, but we do encourage you to read it in advance –
it really will make a world of difference.
What happens if I don’t make it
into the Advanced Drama Class?
If you’re truly passionate about acting and performing and want to
learn more, the Principles of Drama (POD) class is a great option! More time
will be spent in this class on areas for growth like character development,
improvisation, breathing, vocalization, and memorization. The POD class is also a performance class.
What if I can’t make the
audition on the scheduled dates?
If there are scheduling conflicts that will not allow you to attend
either date, please contact Mrs. Henaghan in advance at marybhenaghan@gmail.com . More than
likely, a one-on-one audition can be arranged.
